Iraq Violence On The Rise
Posted April 16, 2008
The rising death toll could not come at a worse time for supporters of the Iraq war.
Dozens of people were killed Tuesday as car bombs tore through major Iraqi Troops Carboomthoroughfares during the busy lunch hour. The explosions – in Baqouba and Ramadi – which left at least 50 dead and another 55 injured, marked the bloodiest day in months, according to several media reports from the area. U.S. officials said that in Baqouba, a car laden with explosives blew up near a restaurant, courthouse and provincial government offices. That one killed 38 and wounded 40. A suicide car bomb in Ramadi killed 14 and injured 15, CNN reported. Police said that six people were killed and 26 wounded in Baghdad as new skirmishes erupted in the Sadr City stronghold of the Mahdi Army militia overnight. Sources told the news agency that ambulances and rescue workers were scrambling to deal with the scores of victims. The officials say they believe al-Qaeda is responsible for the acts. The recent escalation in violence could not have come at a worse time for the Bush administration, and Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain, who have been stressing the success of last year’s surge in troop strength. They have been making the case that violence in the region has abated, urging lawmakers to stay the course, despite no timeline or benchmarks for when the lion’s share of U.S. troops should be withdrawn. Are you for immediate troop withdrawal or should they stay until the job is done?
