Pope Pledges To Help Heal Sexual Wounds Church Caused
Posted April 16, 2008

Benedict is the first pontiff to visit the United States since the abuse scandal erupted.

Pope Benedict XVI, aboard his papal plane thepope.jpgenroute to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, said he was “deeply ashamed” of the swath of sex abuse cases that rocked Catholic churches throughout the United States. “It is difficult for me to understand how it was possible that priests betray in this way their mission … to these children,” he told reporters aboard the plane. Benedict, who is making his first visit to the United States as pope, promised that he would do everything within his power to assure that similar abuse would never happen again. “We are deeply ashamed and will do whatever is possible so that this does not happen in the future. We will absolutely exclude pedophiles from the sacred ministry. “It is more important to have good priests than many priests. We will do everything possible to heal this wound.” The Catholic has paid a staggering $2 billion in settlements as a result of sexual-abuse lawsuits. During his visit, the first for any pope since the sexual scandal broke, Benedict will celebrate Masses at two baseball stadiums, pray at ground zero in New York and meet with President Bush when his plane lands at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington, D.C. What do you think about Pope Benedict’s visit?
